This Victorian centre table dates from the mid 19th century and is made of rosewood with a warm brown colour and book-matched veneer grain patterns. The round top rests on a carved pedestal base with scroll feet, and the mechanism allows the top to tilt vertically. Visible details include distinct timber tones, sculpted pedestal woodwork, and scrolled foot terminals. Measuring 72 cm high, 130 cm wide, and 129 cm deep, the table fits comfortably into traditional or eclectic interiors. In a modern home, it serves as a central display surface in a large hallway, library, or drawing room when lowered, or stands as a decorative wall panel when tilted.

Mid-19th century centre tables were designed to sit freestanding in the middle of a drawing room or entrance hall. Constructed predominantly with rosewood or mahogany veneers, these tables often incorporate tilt-top mechanisms allowing the circular top to store vertically when not in use.

Craftsmen utilised timber substrates finished with highly figured rosewood veneers, frequently arranged in symmetrical book-matched patterns. Construction features brass tilt catches, solid wood block hinges, and a central carved column ending in quadripartite bases with scroll feet.

Authentic pieces display natural wood figure variations, period joinery on the under-framing, and original metal latch mechanisms beneath the top. Look for signs of age such as subtle shrinkage along veneer lines and historical hand-carving marks on the pedestal legs.

Position the table in a spacious foyer or hallway as a focal anchor for floral arrangements and display items. Alternatively, place it in a living room to structure a traditional seating arrangement or to serve as a compact dining table.

Keep the timber away from direct heat sources and strong sunlight to prevent the veneer from drying out or fading. Clean the surface using a dry microfibre cloth and apply beeswax polish sparingly along the grain to maintain the finish.
