Antique Victorian Mahogany Low Side Table C.1890

19th century
Description

A late 19th century mahogany side table of low form, the solid top featuring rounded front corners, set over a single full-width frieze drawer, all raised on crisply turned legs.

Likely intended as a bedroom chamber table, its lower profile and broad surface work well alongside 19th-century bedsteads. Today, these distinct proportions solve a frequent framing challenge in the drawing room, providing an ideal height beside a deep-seated armchair or low sofa end where a standard side table stands too tall.

Very good antique condition, displaying a rich patina and light surface wear consistent with age. Structurally sound and ready to place.

English, circa 1890.

This late Victorian mahogany side table follows a low form with a rectangular top and rounded front corners. The piece presents a warm brown timber colour with a rich patina, a single full-width frieze drawer fitted with two dark wooden knob handles, and crisply turned legs. Standing at 66 cm high, 69 cm wide, and 50.5 cm deep, it displays light surface wear consistent with age and remains in very good antique condition. In a modern interior, this versatile table works well at the end of a sofa or beside a deep-seated armchair where a standard-height side table stands too tall. The lower profile provides an ideal surface for everyday items within easy reach in the living room or study. The construction is structurally sound and ready for placement in the home.

Late Victorian side tables, produced towards the end of the nineteenth century, often feature turned spindle legs, compact proportions, and single or double drawers with wooden knob handles. Mahogany was a favoured timber during this era due to its durability and rich grain appearance.

Tables from this period were predominantly constructed using dense hardwoods such as mahogany, oak, or walnut, featuring hand-carved or lathe-turned legs. Internal drawer linings were frequently made from secondary softwoods like pine or ash, fitted with hand-cut dovetail joints.

Authentic pieces typically display natural hand-turned leg details, hand-cut dovetail construction on the drawer joints, and original wood knob pulls or brass hardware. Unfinished interior drawer surfaces and genuine age-related wear or natural patination on the mahogany timber also indicate authenticity.

A Victorian side table functions well as a bedside nightstand, an entryway accent table, or an occasional lamp table beside an armchair or sofa. Its compact size and warm timber tones allow it to complement both traditional and minimalist modern decor schemes.

Maintain mahogany surfaces by dusting regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year in the direction of the grain. Keep the piece away from direct sunlight and harsh heat sources to prevent timber cracking or fading.
