Victorian Mahogany Side Table

19th century
Description

A beautiful Victorian side table or writing table made from richly coloured mahogany, featuring two drawers, shaped and pierced legs united by a central stretcher, with decorative finials to each corner and to the centre of the legs. The drawer fronts are veneered in book-matched flame mahogany and retain their original turned wooden knobs.

We have another table that is almost a pair with this one and came from the same property - please see our other items.

Condition: Overall this is in very good condition and has obviously been very well looked after throughout its life. The only notable flaws are that the front left finial (as you are looking at) it has been broken and repaired, there are a few small knocks around the drawer openings, and there are some faint indented lines on the top caused by someone writing without any padding under the paper - these marks are difficult to see unless the light hits them in a certain way.

Dimensions:

Width - 112cm

Depth - 52cm

Height - 85.5cm

Height to worktop - 74cm

Mainland UK delivery (excluding the Scottish highlands) is included in the price - if you would like a quote for delivery elsewhere, or if you would like to collect the item yourself, please get in touch. Delivery of furniture usually takes between 7 and 21 days from order, though can sometimes take longer. If you need an item by a certain date please speak to us prior to ordering and we’ll try to help.

Antique and Unique has dated this Victorian Mahogany Side Table to the Victorian era.

Victorian mahogany side tables typically feature rich dark wood finishes, flame mahogany veneers, turned or carved leg supports, and functional drawers. Designed during the 19th century, they reflect the eras preference for sturdy craftsmanship and classic decorative detailing.

These tables were primarily constructed using solid mahogany for structural framing, with decorative flame mahogany veneers applied to drawer fronts and tabletops. Secondary timber such as pine or oak was frequently used for internal drawer linings.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints inside the drawers, natural wood shrinkage or ageing marks on unpolished undersides, period brass or turned wood handles, and original castors on the feet.

Position the table in an entrance hall paired with a contemporary mirror or modern artwork above it. Modern ceramics and simple botanical arrangements help contrast the warm wood tones while bridging traditional and contemporary aesthetics.

Regularly dust with a soft, lint-free cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to maintain the lustre. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent wood warping and veneer drying.
