Antique Victorian Mahogany Barley Twist Side Table

19th century
Description

A stunning antique Victorian mahogany barley twist side table. This was made in England, it dates from around the 1860-1880 period.

It is beautifully made and is of really high quality. The barley twist base gives a striking design aspect, it sits on a beautifully carved tripod base and has a solid mahogany top.

We have had this recently re-polished, it is in excellent condition for its age. There are some small marks and indentations beneath the polish here and there, with plenty of character and charm as you would expect from an antique item.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Barley twist furniture features spiralled wooden columns created through woodturning techniques that gained widespread popularity during the nineteenth century. This design element was frequently applied to table stems, chair legs, and cabinet supports to add vertical texture to Victorian interiors.

Victorian wine tables were predominantly crafted from dense hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, and rosewood. These woods offered structural strength for slender, carved supports and allowed for a rich, polished finish.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces typically exhibit signs of hand-carving along the base, natural wood grain variations, and traditional joinery techniques such as hand-cut dovetails or mortise and tenon joints beneath the top. The timber often displays an aged patina and minor wear consistent with historical use.

A small tripod table can serve as an occasional drinks stand beside an armchair, a plant stand in a well-lit corner, or a compact surface beside a bed. Its dark timber provides a grounded accent when contrasted against neutral walls or modern soft furnishings.

Dust mahogany surfaces regularly with a soft, dry lint-free cloth, avoiding liquid spray cleaners that can strip historical finishes. Apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year, buffing along the direction of the wood grain to maintain the timber.
