This nineteenth-century Qing Dynasty Chinese cloisonne enamel tripod censer incorporates gilded brass, cloisonne enamel, and bronze. The vessel displays a multicolour palette of gilded gold, turquoise, red, green, and dark blue, showcasing lotus scrollwork, scrolling vines, chrysanthemums, and a dark blue diaper border on the rim edge. It has an openwork pierced bronze cover with scrolling vines and upright loop handles, and stands on three gilded cabriole tripod legs shaped with mythical creature faces. The piece measures 12 cm high, 9 cm wide, and 9 cm deep, weighing 365g. It sits safely on a mantelpiece in a gentleman's library setting.

Cloisonne enamel production in China flourished during the Ming and Qing dynasties, adapting techniques originally imported from Western Asia. Craftspeople created decorative and ritual vessels, including censers, primarily for temples, imperial courts, and scholar studies.

Craftspeople soldered thin copper or brass wires onto a cast metal body to form decorative compartments called cloisons. These compartments were filled with coloured glass enamel pastes, fired in a kiln, ground flat, polished, and finished with gilding on exposed metal surfaces.

Mid-19th century pieces typically feature heavy cast copper or bronze bodies, minor surface pitting or air bubbles within the fired enamel, and hand-chased metal details. Wear on the gilding and natural oxidation on unpolished bases further indicate age.

An antique cloisonne censer functions as a focal accent on a mantelpiece, sideboard, or bookshelf. The multicoloured surface pattern pairs well with minimalist backdrops or rich wood furniture.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth or soft brush. Avoid using liquid chemical cleaners, water immersion, or abrasive polishes, as moisture and chemicals can degrade original gilding and pit the vitreous enamel.
