Antique Victorian Mahogany Tripod Candle Stand C.1890

19th century
Description

A late 19th century mahogany tripod stand, the circular top with raised lip set over a hand-carved fluted stem, raised on a tripod base of sweeping cabriole legs with pad feet.

With the hallmarks of a top-tier late Victorian workshop using authentic 18th-century techniques, this stand offers exceptional hand-worked cabinet quality in a desirable compact scale. Its small tripod footprint allows the base to slide neatly beside an armchair or tuck into a tight reading alcove.

Very good antique condition, displaying a deep natural patina with minor surface wear consistent with and a natural solid shrinkage split to the underside of the top. Structurally solid, clean and ready to place.

English, circa 1890.

Originating as functional furniture to hold single candles or oil lamps higher for improved illumination, Victorian candle stands featured turned central columns and stable tripod bases tailored for domestic interiors during the late nineteenth century.

These stands were predominantly crafted from dense hardwoods like mahogany, walnut, or rosewood, utilising hand-turned pedestals, hand-dovetailed or splayed joint tripod legs, and dished or moulded round tops.

Authentic late Victorian pieces display natural timber wear, original dowel or hand-cut joinery, hand-turned fluting on the baluster, and slight irregularities on the underside indicative of period woodworking techniques.

In modern interiors, these compact stands function effectively as plant pedestals, sculptural accent pieces in quiet corners, or as small side tables next to low-profile armchairs.

Dust the timber regularly with a soft cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to maintain the original finish, keeping the stand away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent drying or fading.
