Early 20th Century Decoy Duck - No6

1900 - 1920
Description

We have been fortunate to find a small collection of original Decoy ducks.

Characterful antique folk art decoy duck, shaped and painted by hand with the kind of honest surface and irregularity that only comes with age.

Originally made as a working decoy, it has developed a fabulous timeworn patina, with areas of wear and softened paint that give it real depth and individuality. Pieces like this were created as functional objects rather than decoration, which is precisely what makes them so appealing today.

We love these displayed individually as small sculptural objects, although they work particularly well gathered together as a collection on a console, drapers table or open shelf. Their simple form sits brilliantly alongside both antique and contemporary pieces.

A great little piece of folk art with plenty of personality, history and decorative presence.

This early 20th-century decoy duck is an example of folk art sculpture, shaped by hand from timber with a formed bill and a sculptural waterfowl design. The piece has a distressed painted finish in weathered brown and muted green, displaying an honest surface with areas of wear, softened paint and a timeworn patina. The duck measures 16 cm high, 33 cm wide and 8 cm deep. Originally made as a working decoy, the object functions today as decorative folk art suited to a Highland Hunting Lodge interior. It sits on a mantelpiece, console, drapers table or open shelf, displayed individually as a small sculptural object or gathered together within a collection alongside antique and contemporary pieces.

Wooden decoy ducks originated as functional hunting tools designed to attract wild waterfowl. Over the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, regional carvers developed distinct shaping and painting styles, transforming these utilitarian objects into recognised forms of folk art.

Traditional decoy ducks were typically hand-carved from lightweight timbers such as pine, cedar, or balsa. They were joined at the neck, weighted with lead keels for water stability, and finished with oil-based paints to withstand aquatic exposure.

Authentic period decoys often show natural surface wear, paint flaking, water staining, and structural marks from working use. Look for hand-carved tool marks, carved or inset eyes, and evidence of historic ballast attachments on the base.

An antique decoy duck functions as a sculptural accent on a mantelpiece, bookshelf, or sideboard. Placing it alongside natural materials such as weathered oak, leather-bound books, or brass objects highlights its rustic texture and historic character.

Keep wooden decoys in a climate-controlled environment away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent wood shrinkage or paint peeling. Dust gently with a soft dry brush and avoid applying chemical solvents or harsh waxes.
