Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This nineteenth-century Gothic Revival book slide is made from walnut and brass with a burr walnut veneer and ebonised moulded edges. The piece has a dark brown timber finish and gold-coloured brass mounts. The extending book slide measures 16 cm high, 50 cm wide and 14 cm deep. The folding ends feature an arched Gothic shape, pierced brass tracery, foliate engraving, screws securing the brass mounts, and a sliding track mechanism. The item serves as a functional desk accessory for organising volumes on an office desk, library table, or study bookcase. It operates with an adjustable extending mechanism to hold varying quantities of books between the two upright ends.

FAQs

Gothic Revival items from the mid-to-late nineteenth century frequently feature architectural elements drawn from medieval design, such as pointed lancet arches, trefoils, and elaborate tracery. Desk accessories often combine dark woods like walnut or oak with engraved or pierced brass fretwork.

Nineteenth-century book slides were predominantly constructed using hardwoods such as walnut, rosewood, coromandel, or mahogany. These wooden bases were commonly paired with polished brass, gilt bronze, or ivory mounts and featured brass hinges or concealed sliding tracks.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces typically exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints on internal slides, original slotted steel or brass screws, and natural age patina on the brass and timber. Mechanisms operate on simple tongue-and-groove or brass sliding runners.

An extending book slide can be placed on an office desk, console table, or library shelf to organise hardback volumes. The contrast between dark timber and brass tracery provides a structured focal point within traditional or eclectic design schemes.

Dust the item regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth. To preserve the original finish and patina, avoid harsh metal polishes on the brass and apply a light coat of natural beeswax polish to the timber surfaces.
