This Edwardian freestanding card table from around 1900 is fashioned from dark brown rosewood with satinwood and ivorine inlay, finished with brass castors. The rectangular folding top carries floral satinwood corner inlays, while the frieze incorporates a central inlaid decorative panel and four square tapering legs. An X-frame cross stretcher connects the legs near the floor, providing stability and visual interest. The piece measures 73 cm high, 83 cm wide, and 43 cm deep. In a modern interior, this versatile piece serves multiple functions beyond a traditional gaming surface. Placed against a wall in a hallway, reception room, or empty corner, it operates effectively as an occasional console or side table. The swivel mechanism allows the top to open when required for card games or entertaining guests, whilst maintaining a compact footprint for daily placement.

An Edwardian card table is a foldable or swivel-top occasional table produced during the reign of King Edward VII (19011910). Designed specifically for card games and parlour socialising, these tables feature decorative wood inlays, delicate legs, and compact proportions to suit formal reception rooms.

Edwardian furniture makers favoured rich hardwoods such as rosewood, mahogany, and satinwood. Construction frequently incorporated delicate boxwood or satinwood marquetry inlays, brass castors, and green baize or felt lining on the playing surface.

Authentic Edwardian pieces typically display clean, refined lines, neoclassical marquetry motifs like urns and swags, and hand-cut joinery such as dovetail joints inside drawers. Original brass castors and natural surface wear on the timber underside further indicate period origin.

When closed, an antique card table functions effectively as a compact console or side table against a wall or behind a sofa. Pair it with modern table lamps, ceramic vases, or framed contemporary artwork to balance historical craftsmanship with modern aesthetics.

Maintain the wood finish by dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth and applying a high-grade beeswax polish annually along the grain. Keep the table away from direct sunlight and central heating sources to prevent timber shrinkage, veneer lifting, or colour fading.
