Antique Georgian Mahogany Triple Pillar Dining Table 12–14 Seater Extending with Two Leaves

19th century
Description

A fine quality Georgian mahogany triple pillar dining table of generous proportions designed to seat twelve to fourteen people comfortably when fully extended. A classic and highly desirable form offering both scale and flexibility.

The table stands on three elegant turned pedestal columns each raised on swept reeded legs terminating in original brass capped castors. The proportions are excellent with a well balanced stance giving both strength and visual elegance.

The top is formed from solid mahogany with a rich warm colour and attractive figuring throughout. It extends by means of two additional leaves allowing the table to be used in multiple configurations depending on space and requirement. When closed the table divides into two separate sections which can be used as a pair of console tables, a highly practical feature for modern living.

Triple pillar tables such as this were designed for large formal dining rooms allowing hosts to accommodate significant gatherings while maintaining a refined appearance. Today they remain one of the most practical and sought after dining table forms.

Popularised in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, Georgian extending dining tables feature modular tops supported by central pedestal pillars, allowing additional leaves to be inserted to accommodate larger gatherings.

These tables were primarily crafted from solid or veneered Cuban mahogany, chosen for its dense grain and stability, and featured solid brass end caps and castors on splayed legs.

Look for hand-cut dovetail joints on the bearer rails, original brass clip attachments or bearer mechanisms under the table top, and authentic hand-carved details along the pedestal supports.

Pair a polished mahogany table with contemporary upholstered chairs or minimalist lighting fixtures to create an engaging visual contrast between traditional woodwork and modern interior elements.

Protect the timber finish by placing mats under hot or moist items, dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth, and applying beeswax polish periodically to retain the natural lustre without silicone build-up.
