Early 19th Century Extending Mahogany Antique Dining Table Made by and Stamped "Gillows . Lancaster"

19th century
Description

Very fine quality early nineteenth century antique dining table made by Gillows of Lancaster and London. This is a very versatile table, having the ability to extend to over twelve feet long while also having five different length options by the removal of one or more leaves until it becomes circular. In addition to this, a great aspect of the Gillows "Imperial Mechanism" is that the two ends separate from each other and can be displayed as a pair of console tables in case the dining room is needed for something else. This also makes the table a lot easier to carry from room to room or even outside if required. Another benefit is that the table could be extended a little further by the addition of another leaf without damage to the table mechanism. The legs are the classic Gillows reeded leg with V shape to the base ending in a brass cap and caster. There are many images in the Gillows sketch books of this leg design. There are at least three stamps on the underside of the table with the mark "GILLOWS - LANCASTER". This is one of the finest tables of the period made by probably the top maker in the country out of the finest cuts of mahogany available.

This table has been restored using traditional polish and natural beeswax to create a good deep shine while retaining the golden brown colour. The timber itself is a very fine cut of mahogany with the grain matching across all surfaces. The leaves are the original ones and the screws line up on the brass clip retainers. There is a built in box in the mechanism to store the brass clips that hold the table together.

This early 19th-century extending dining table is produced in the Regency style and is made from warm brown mahogany with brass fittings, finished in a deep polish and natural beeswax. The piece incorporates reeded turned legs with V shapes at the base, brass castors, a beaded apron moulding, and rounded ends, alongside multiple table leaves and brass clip retainers. Measuring 73 cm high, 387 cm wide, and 137 cm deep, the table extends to over twelve feet long, offers five length options, and separates into a pair of console tables. The table serves as a functional dining surface for large gatherings in a formal dining room or spacious open-plan living area. The modular construction allows the leaves to be removed until the structure becomes circular, or the ends to be displayed independently when the room requires alternative arrangements. The heavy timber frame and extensive length provide a permanent dining solution suited to hosting multiple guests for meals and dinner parties.

Regency extending dining tables, popularized in the early 19th century, feature telescopic extension mechanisms, rounded D-ends, and finely turned or reeded legs, often raised on brass castors to allow smooth re-configuration.

Tables from this era were primarily constructed using high-density solid mahogany or mahogany veneers, supported by internal oak runner mechanisms and fitted with cast brass clip fastenings and wheeled castors.

Authentic Gillows pieces frequently feature an incised stamp reading GILLOWS, GILLOWS LANCASTER, or GILLOW. L.A.N.C.A.S.T.E.R on the top edge of a drawer, leg, or extension runner, alongside superior timber quality and precise joinery.

A grand mahogany dining table provides visual weight in a formal dining room; contrast the dark timber by pairing it with contemporary upholstered seating, minimalist pendant lighting, and neutral wall tones.

Regularly dust with a soft cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish twice yearly along the grain. Keep the table away from direct heat sources and protect the surface from hot items or liquid spills using table pads.
