This red lacquer Chinoiserie side table dates from 1930 and belongs to the Chinoiserie style. The wooden piece displays a red painted finish with gilded accents, and includes brass hardware on the drawer front. Decorative details visible on the surface comprise a hand-painted crane motif, botanical illustrations on the drawer and lower tier shelf, turned legs with segmented golden rings, and painted floral patterns on the feet. The table is 84 cm high, 51 cm wide, and 31 cm deep. Positioned in a modern living space, this side table serves well beside the end of a sofa to hold small decorative objects or reading materials. The narrow footprint allows it to fit comfortably in tighter alcoves, hallways, or narrow passages where surface space is required without obstructing foot traffic. The lower tier provides additional storage or display room for books or decorative vessels.

FAQs

Chinoiserie is a decorative style that originated in Europe during the 17th century, characterized by Western interpretations of Chinese and East Asian artistic traditions, including hand-painted lacquerwork, gilding, and nature motifs.

Traditional lacquer furniture is constructed from a solid wood substrate coated in multiple layers of natural or mineral resin lacquer, followed by hand-painted detail work using gold leaf, bronze powders, and natural mineral pigments.

Authentic pieces feature raised paint texture from hand craftsmanship rather than flat printed transfers, subtle variations in gilt brushwork, natural crazing within the lacquer varnish, and traditional wooden joinery.

A vibrant red lacquer table functions as a focal statement piece when positioned alongside contemporary neutral seating, balancing understated minimalist upholstery with rich colour and detailed surface decoration.

Maintain lacquer finishes by dusting gently with a dry microfibre cloth, keeping the item away from direct heat sources and high humidity, and avoiding chemical solvents or abrasive cleaners that degrade the protective top coat.
