FAQs

Chinoiserie refers to a European decorative style that emerged in the 17th century, reflecting Western interpretations of East Asian artistic traditions. Western craftsmen mimicked Asian lacquering techniques through process known as japanning, decorating furniture with figures, pagodas, and natural landscapes.

These pieces typically feature a timber frame coated in multiple layers of black or dark lacquer. Surface ornamentation incorporates raised gilding, polychrome pigments, and inlaid decorative accents such as mother-of-pearl, bone, or soft stone.

Authentic period pieces display hand-painted detail rather than transfer prints, along with natural age crazing within the resinous lacquer surface. Construction features such as hand-carved cabriole legs, traditional joinery, and uniform wear around footrests also indicate genuine age.

A black lacquered side table provides visual grounding when paired alongside contemporary upholstered seating or modern neutral textiles. Its intricate gilded surface contrasts well with minimalist architecture, functioning as a standalone accent piece.

Dust lacquered surfaces gently using a dry, soft microfibre cloth to prevent scratching. Avoid liquid detergents, alcohol-based cleansers, and direct exposure to heat sources or sunlight, which cause lacquer to dry out, warp, or crack.
