There are signs of age and use, some small knocks and marks and old shrinkage splits but nothing detrimental. There are some signs of historic worm in places which has all been treated as a precaution and they are strong and sturdy.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Display pedestals modelled after classical architectural columns gained widespread popularity during the 18th and 19th centuries during the Neoclassical revival. Designed to showcase grand tour antiquities, marble busts, and bronze sculptures, these stands allowed collectors to display prized artifacts at eye level in formal reception rooms and libraries.

Traditional plinths were predominantly crafted from solid hardwoods such as oak, mahogany, and walnut, or carved from stone and marble. Wooden pedestals were shaped using lathe turning for the main shaft, followed by hand-carved fluting and assembled using mortise and tenon joinery for structural stability.

Authentic antique pedestals typically feature uneven hand-cut fluting, natural wood shrinkage around joint boundaries, and genuine surface wear on the circular tops and bases. Examining the underside often reveals historical tool marks, hand-carved elements, and age-related oxidisation of the timber that modern reproductions lack.

In modern interiors, column pedestals can be layered into room corners or alcoves to create variable heights. They serve as effective risers for displaying contemporary ceramic vessels, indoor botanical specimens, modern figurative sculpture, or framed artwork.

To preserve the original finish, antique oak should be dusted regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and treated periodically with a natural beeswax polish. Avoid placing wooden stands near direct heat sources or damp environments to prevent timber warping and finish degradation.
