Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A door porter is a tall, weighted object specifically designed to hold heavy timber doors open, popularised during the Victorian era. Often crafted from cast brass or iron, these objects feature extended handles at the top so users can move them without bending down.

Traditional Victorian door stops were created using sand-casting techniques, pouring molten brass into precision moulds. Many pieces incorporated an internal cast-iron weight within the base to provide the necessary stability for heavy internal doors.

Authentic period brass objects often feature maker marks or registration stamps near the base, such as the WT&S star mark used by William Tonks & Sons. Genuine items also display natural patination in recessed areas and evidence of hand-finishing along casting seams.

An antique brass door stop can be placed adjacent to entryways, hallway doors, or hearths to add architectural interest and warm metallic tones. The classical proportions contrast effectively against minimalist flooring or painted timber skirtings.

To preserve the historical patina, avoid abrasive chemical cleaners or harsh metal polishes that strip surface oxidisation. Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a thin layer of microcrystalline wax to protect the metal finish.
