Quarter-sawn oak showing prominent medullary rays: silvery flecks prized in early 20th-century joinery.
Hinged three-tier linkage: standard folding mechanism for parlour tea service.
Dished circular tiers: turned recesses made to support plates without slipping.
Shaped carrying handle and splayed feet: light construction made to be portable.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Edwardian oak cake stand dates from 1910 and displays a warm brown timber colour with a wax finish. The piece comprises three circular recessed shelves supported by a folding frame mechanism, an arched top handle, and splayed feet. Standing 85 cm high, 27 cm wide and 25 cm deep, it provides a practical display surface for small ornaments or afternoon tea service. In a modern interior, this standalone stand fits neatly into an empty corner of a living room, dining room or hallway, bringing traditional English country house character to domestic spaces. The compact footprint makes it useful for adding vertical display height without occupying significant floor space.

FAQs

An Edwardian tier cake stand, often referred to as a muffin stand or dumb waiter, is a portable piece of furniture popularised during the early twentieth century for serving afternoon tea.

These stands were predominantly crafted from solid hardwoods such as oak, mahogany, or walnut, featuring turned supports and central pivots that allowed the tiers to fold flat when not in use.

Authentic period pieces feature early twentieth-century joinery, light patination, quarter-sawn oak grain patterns, and hand-fitted metal pivots or screws.

In contemporary spaces, a tiered cake stand can be repurposed to display small potted plants, decorative ceramics, or curated collections in a living area or dining room.

Dust regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply a quality beeswax polish along the direction of the wood grain, keeping the item away from direct heat sources and excessive moisture.
