Antique Edwardian Aesthetic Movement Cast Iron Stick Stand by Coalbrookdale C.1905

1900 - 1920
Description

An Edwardian hall stick stand, the pediment featuring a cast 'COALBROOKDALE' foundry cartouche set over an architectural backplate inset with twin rosette tile friezes and matching baluster galleries, framed by barley-twist uprights with turned brass urn finials holding a brass rail, all raised on a stepped, gadrooned base.

Bearing Coalbrookdale’s catalogue pattern number No 254 - 5 alongside the front foundry cartouche, the stand represents a documented 19th-century Aesthetic Movement model. Its secondary Board of Trade registration number (No 402127) establishes a design registered in late 1902, confirming an authentic early Edwardian casting produced from original Victorian pattern tooling.

Very good antique condition with minor surface wear consistent with age, retaining sharp casting detail, a fine patina and with the removable drip tray absent. Structurally sound, clean and ready for placement.

English, circa 1905.

Aesthetic Movement stick stands often combine functional cast iron construction with artistic embellishments, such as floral or geometric ceramic tiles, decorative cresting, and turned architectural details influenced by Japanese and Asian design principles prominent in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

These pieces were primarily constructed from heavy cast iron poured into detailed moulds. They frequently incorporated secondary materials such as glazed earthenware or stoneware ceramic tiles for ornamentation and brass or copper rails to retain walking sticks and umbrellas.

Authentic Coalbrookdale cast iron items typically feature stamped registration marks, a kite mark indicating the design registration date, or the name COALBROOKDALE cast directly into the ironwork along the reverse or upper cresting, alongside specific model numbers.

An antique cast iron stick stand functions as a structural accent piece in entryways, foyers, or boot rooms. Its dark metallic finish and tile detail complement both modern neutral hallway palettes and traditional wood panelling.

Clean the cast iron frame with a dry or lightly dampened microfiber cloth to remove dust, avoiding harsh liquid cleaners that could induce rust. Dust the ceramic tiles gently and treat brass components with a non-abrasive metal polish if tarnishing occurs.
