Arts & Crafts Oak Umbrella & Stick Stand, C.1900

1900 - 1920
Description

A handsome Arts & Crafts oak umbrella and stick stand, dating to the early 20th century, with a wonderfully simple architectural form.

Constructed in solid oak, the stand features distinctive curved upper rails, square uprights with shaped feet and decorative turned wooden bosses to the front. The open framework provides ample space for walking sticks and umbrellas, with the original-style black metal drip tray retained below. The oak has developed a lovely warm colour and patina, while its particularly narrow depth makes it an extremely practical piece for a hallway or entrance where space is limited. A very attractive and useful example of Arts & Crafts design.

Condition: Very good antique condition with minor surface marks, knocks and wear consistent with age and use. Structurally sound. The metal drip tray shows expected signs of use and age.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Arts and Crafts umbrella stands feature honest joinery, solid timber constructionmost commonly oakand functional design with minimal ornamentation such as subtle arches or decorative wooden studs.

These stands were constructed primarily from native hardwoods like oak, walnut, or beech, often incorporating removable zinc, iron, or tin drip trays to retain water.

Look for visible mortise and tenon joinery, quarter-sawn oak showcasing medullary rays, understated hand-finished craftsmanship, and original metal drip trays in the base.

Place the piece in an entryway, porch, or cloakroom to provide structured storage for umbrellas and walking canes while adding warmth to hard-surfaced flooring.

Apply clear beeswax polish to the woodwork periodically, and ensure wet umbrellas are shaken off before placement to prevent long-term moisture buildup on the metal drip tray.
