19th Century Onyx Column with Ormolu Collar

19th century
For Sale by Spinka & Co
Description

K0527 An outstanding French XIXth century multi coloured onyx pedestal, circa 1870, masterfully crafted with exceptional architectural presence. This striking antique column features a highly desirable revolving top, allowing for the dynamic display of sculpture or fine porcelain.

Directly beneath the revolving surface sits a finely chased ormolu gilt-bronze collar, which transitions into a substantial column. The onyx exhibits a captivating, rich variety of natural colours, showcasing intricate veining and vivid banding that catches the light from every angle. The column terminates in a most spectacular base, lavishly adorned with a classic egg-and-dart decoration and four prominent, beautifully sculpted scrolling leaves.

The entire structure stands securely upon an elegant canted base finished with a refined brass moulding. Presented in home-ready condition, this grand pedestal is a testament to 19th-century luxury craftsmanship and serves as a sophisticated statement piece for any interior. c1870

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A 19th-century onyx column pedestal is a tall, decorative display stand crafted from natural onyx stone, frequently accentuated with gilt bronze or ormolu mounts. Popular during the Victorian and Napoleon III eras, these columns were designed to display bronze statues, marble busts, or decorative ceramics in formal interiors.

These pedestals feature solid carved onyx or marble shafts, supported by gilt bronze or brass collars, capitals, and bases. Ormolu refers to high-grade gold-gilded bronze, historically produced using mercury gilding techniques to achieve a durable, metallic sheen.

Authentic 19th-century examples display natural veining variations within the stone, traditional threaded central steel rod construction, and heavy, detailed cast ormolu mounts showing subtle age-appropriate patina and casting marks.

An onyx pedestal serves as a focal point in an entryway, bay window, or alcove. It can be paired with a contemporary sculpture, a classic terracotta urn, or a trailing houseplant to create contrast against modern architectural backgrounds.

Onyx is a porous stone that should be cleaned using soft microfibre cloths and pH-neutral cleaners, avoiding acidic substances. The ormolu mounts should be dusted gently with a dry brush, avoiding abrasive metal polishes that can remove historic gilding.
