Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Georgian sofa table is made from mahogany in a warm brown timber colour with decorative satinwood string inlay and banding along the top edge. The rectangular top has drop leaves on either side supported by swing out supports, and the piece is finished identically at the back so it can stand freely in a room. Two inline drawers are set into the frieze with round brass knobs, keyholes, and thin drawer linings. Below, the table stands on twin-pillar supports joined by a stretcher, leading down to splayed legs that terminate in brass claw feet fitted with castors. Measuring 73 cm high, 157 cm wide with flaps up, and 65 cm deep, this table is suited for placement behind a sofa, in a living room, or as a centre table in a study. The design accommodates multiple domestic uses, offering surface space for lamps or books alongside storage within the integrated drawers.

FAQs

Sofa tables originated in the late 18th century during the Georgian era, designed to sit behind a sofa or freestanding in a room, featuring drop leaves and shallow drawers.

Georgian sofa tables were typically crafted from solid mahogany or mahogany veneers, often decorated with satinwood or boxwood stringing, featuring brass drawer pulls and brass castor feet.

Authentic Georgian pieces exhibit hand-dovetailed drawer joints, original brass castors or hardware, natural hand-cut wood veneers, and age-appropriate oxidisation on the timber underside.

A Georgian sofa table can be placed behind a floating sofa, positioned against a hallway wall as a console, or used as a slimline writing desk in a home office.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax paste annually along the wood grain, avoiding direct sunlight and proximity to radiators.
