Rare 17thc Carved Panel of Joan of Arc.

Description

An extremely rare carved panel depicting Joan of Arc, in well patinated oak and skilfully executed. Joan of Arc, now a patron saint of France was generally regarded, in the 17th century, as a heretic and therefore vilified. It was not until the 19th century that opinions began to change as she was gradually accepted as having saved France from invasion and canonised. During the 17th century as the Age of Enlightenment took hold her admirers would have been very few and so depictions of her are very scarce.

This wonderful panel depicts Joan in half armour, the sword or possibly standard from her right hand is lost to time and there is a split to one side of the top. The story of Joan is an evocative one, full of drama and betrayal, though France has now embraced her it was not always the case and this piece shows that for some at least, Joan was owed a debt of gratitude
