Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Antique hand-painted leather screens, popular from the seventeenth through nineteenth centuries in Europe, served both as functional draught excluders and decorative architectural dividers. Often produced in Spain, Flanders, or France, these multi-panel folding screens featured oil paintings depicting floral still lives, exotic birds, or classical scenes executed directly onto stretched leather hide.

These screens typically feature stretched hide leather secured over a solid wooden internal frame using brass or iron upholstery tacks. The leather surface was prepared with gesso before oil paints and glazes were applied, often finished with protective varnishes that darken to a warm amber tone over time.

Authentic period screens display natural craquelure across the painted surface, aged patination along the hide edges, and signs of historical wear near the panel hinges. The reverse side often retains original canvas, hessian lining, or aged leather backing, held by hand-hammered metal studs around the perimeter.

A multi-panel painted screen functions effectively as a focal point when placed flat against a neutral wall as large-scale artwork, or angled in an empty corner to add depth and warmth. It can also be positioned behind a sofa or reading armchair to create a defined zone within an open-plan room.

Keep the screen positioned away from direct heat sources, radiators, and prolonged direct sunlight to prevent the leather from drying out or splitting. Dust gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth or horsehair brush, avoiding wet cleaning agents or chemical leather conditioners that could compromise historical paint layers.
