Antique Mahogany and Leather Library Steps

1920 - 1940
Description

A superb set of antique mahogany and leather library steps in the Georgian style. They were made in England, and date from around the 1930’s period.

The quality is fantastic, they are very useful for reaching high shelves, and also make great side tables / decorative items. The mahogany frame is finely constructed, and the steps have inset tooled leather surfaces.

We have had these recently re-polished, the condition is excellent for their age. The mahogany has a wonderful patina with some minor marks and bumps remaining under the polish here and there, commensurate for age.

The brass topped pole that stands above the steps can be lifted out, so this breaks down into a smaller size for ease of transport.

Width – 17 inches , 43 cm

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Library steps are specialized wooden furniture items designed during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries to allow access to higher shelving in private libraries, studies, and personal collections.

Traditional construction typically utilized solid hardwoods such as mahogany, oak, or walnut, frequently accented with gilt-tooled leather tread inserts and brass fittings or finials.

Authentic period examples demonstrate hand-cut joinery, historic wear along the treads, natural patination on turned timber elements, and genuine hand-tooled leather detailing.

These steps function as distinctive accent pieces in home offices, reading nooks, or living rooms, serving as unique side tables or plant stands while adding architectural height.

Keep the wood dusted with a soft cloth and apply beeswax polish periodically. The leather treads should be conditioned with a dedicated leather balm to prevent drying and cracking.
