Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This tall nineteenth-century Oriental Chinoiserie wall art panel is constructed from wood finished with dark brown lacquer and embellished with gold leaf. The upper section displays a floral vessel motif, while the lower portion depicts gilt narrative figures, both enclosed within a geometric Greek key border and a two-tier panel framing. Visible details include vertical wooden plank joins and surface wear on the finish, while practical measurements are 98 cm high by 65 cm wide. Suitable for placement above a sideboard in a gentleman's library, this decorative piece mounts directly to a wall. The dark brown and gold colour scheme complements traditional interior settings.

FAQs

A 19th-century Oriental lacquer panel is a decorative wooden artwork crafted using traditional East Asian techniques, where resin from lacquer trees is applied in multiple layers and embellished with gilded narrative scenes, floral motifs, or geometric borders.

These panels were built using dried wood substrates coated with refined sap from the lacquer tree. Artisans applied numerous thin coats of lacquer, allowing each to dry and be polished before painting or gilding details with gold leaf and mineral pigments.

Authentic 19th-century pieces typically exhibit fine surface craquelure, age-appropriate wear to the gilded decoration, and hand-planed joinery on the wooden backing, contrasting with modern uniform synthetic finishes.

Position the panel as a focal point above a sideboard or console table, pairing its dark background and gilded details with understated contemporary furniture to highlight the intricate narrative artwork.

Keep the panel away from direct sunlight, extreme humidity, and direct heat sources to prevent cracking or warping. Dust gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and avoid water or chemical solvents.
