A French Rococo Revival folding screen or room divider originates from around 1900. Made from walnut with paint and brass, the piece has a warm brown finish. The three-fold screen has carved cresting at the top of each panel, along with moulded wooden frames, brass hinges, and cabriole feet. Each panel includes hand-painted pastoral scenes at the top, musical trophies in the centre, and floral garlands, bouquets, and scrollwork throughout. The panels also feature lattice patterns near the bottom and a visible patina of age on the painted surfaces. Measuring 191 cm high and 165 cm wide, the screen functions practically as a room divider or dressing screen in a bedroom, dressing room, or living space to section off areas or provide privacy. It stands directly on wooden flooring against an interior wall.

Keep the screen away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent the timber from warping and the paint from fading. Dust the carved frame and panels gently with a soft microfibre duster, and nourish the exposed wooden elements periodically with a high-grade beeswax polish.

A painted screen works exceptionally well placed flat against a neutral wall as oversized art or positioned angled in a corner to soften room acoustics and create visual depth. It can also be utilised flexibly to section off a reading nook or home office area.

Authentic turn-of-the-century pieces display genuine hand-carved joinery details, natural patination on the timber, and hand-painted artistry rather than modern printed graphics. Original brass bi-directional hinges and minor age-related crazing to the paint layer also indicate period authenticity.

These screens typically feature solid hardwood frames, such as walnut, oak, or gilded beech, carved with intricate scrolls and crestings. The main panels were constructed from canvas, wood, or leather and decorated with oil paint, lacquer, or fine silk textiles.

Popularised during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, French folding screens (paravents) evolved from functional wind draught shields into elaborate decorative centrepieces. By the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, makers frequently referenced Rococo aesthetics, combining carved timber framework with romantic pastoral panels inspired by artists like Antoine Watteau.
