Scagliola is a composite technique using plaster, glue, and pigments to imitate marble. During the 18th and 19th century Grand Tour era, artisans crafted columns and tabletop souvenirs in the likeness of famous classical marbles, such as the dark green, brecciated Verde Antico stone found in ancient Roman ruins.

Scagliola is produced by mixing pulverized selenite plaster with animal glues and natural mineral pigments. This mixture is applied to a substrate, inlaid with marble chips or coloured pastes, and meticulously polished with oil and pumice to achieve a polished finish resembling solid stone.

Authentic period scagliola exhibits subtle hand-painted or inlaid variations rather than repetitive printed patterns. Older pieces often display age-related micro-crazing on the polished plaster surface, seam lines along the substrate, and carved marble or stone bases rather than synthetic resin components.

A classical pedestal serves as a vertical accent when placed in an alcove, hallway, or corner. Interior designers frequently position bronze statuary, ceramic vases, or sculpted busts atop the capital to create height and balance within contemporary spaces.

Because scagliola is a plaster-based material, it must be kept dry and shielded from high humidity. Dust the surface regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and apply a thin coat of clear microcrystalline wax annually to preserve the polished lustre.
