Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

FAQs

Emerging as popular decorative items during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, cast brass doorstops (or door porters) were designed to hold heavy interior doors open while adding a decorative motif to a room.

These pieces were typically manufactured using sand casting techniques, where molten brass was poured into sand moulds, creating dense metal objects finished with hand-chasing to detail floral or sculptural relief.

Authentic examples often exhibit seam lines from casting moulds, signs of hand finishing, authentic wear or oxidisation on the base, and a substantial weight appropriate to their function.

A brass doorstop can be positioned on a fireplace hearth, placed beside an entryway door, or used atop a heavy stack of books on a bookshelf as a sculptural brass accent.

Dust regularly with a soft cloth and, if a brighter metallic finish is preferred, apply a specialised brass polish; alternatively, allow the metal to age naturally to preserve its patina over time.
