This nineteenth-century antique English Victorian Staffordshire pottery figure group depicts a mother poodle with two smaller puppies seated upon a gilt-lined oval cobalt blue base. The earthenware group uses a white glaze finished with shredded clay coat details to create textured fleece, alongside hand-painted facial features and a collar with a small tag. Crazing lines run through the white ceramic body of the seated animals, and the blue plinth shows uneven tonal variation along its base line. Measuring 14.00 cm high, 11.70 cm wide, and 6.30 cm deep, this decorative figure suits display on a mantelpiece within an English country house interior.

FAQs

Staffordshire figures are earthenware ornaments produced in the Staffordshire potteries region of England during the nineteenth century, depicting various animals, historical figures, and narrative scenes for domestic interior display.

These figures were typically made from press-moulded lead-glazed earthenware, with textured fleece applied using shredded clay or sand granulations before firing, set atop cobalt blue decorated plinths with gilt highlights.

Authentic nineteenth-century Staffordshire figures usually feature press-moulded hollow interiors, unglazed or plain flat bases, natural glaze crazing, and hand-painted enamel details showing light age-related wear.

These decorative ceramics are often placed on mantelpieces, bookshelves, or sideboards, paired with vintage books, brass accents, or modern neutral decor to provide visual texture and historical context.

Clean the surface gently using a soft, dry brush or a slightly dampened cloth with mild water, avoiding water immersion or chemical cleansers that could damage the glaze or cold-painted enamels.
