This vintage Royal Doulton porcelain figurine, entitled "Modena" and numbered HN 1845, dates from the 1940 Art Deco period. Modelled by Leslie Harradine, the piece is finished with a high-gloss glaze in shades of vibrant blue, pink, and white, complemented by hand-painted floral garment details, a floral-accented headdress, and pink roses adorning the bodice and hair. The underside bears the manufacturer's green printed backstamp, the handwritten title and pattern number, an impressed date code, and a decorator's monogram. The figure depicts a woman wearing a full crinoline skirt and a floral draped veil. Measuring 19 cm high, 16 cm wide, and 12 cm deep, this decorative object is suited for display on a mantelpiece within a living room, study, or hallway. Collectors of early twentieth-century English ceramics place such porcelain figures on display shelves, sideboards, or occasional tables to add historical character to traditional or eclectic interiors.

Royal Doulton introduced its famous range of glazed porcelain figurines in the early twentieth century, establishing a distinctive style under art directors like Charles Noke. Models were given individual HN reference numbers, named after head painter Harry Tittensor, and featured designs created by renowned artists throughout the Art Deco and mid-century eras.

These figures were constructed using liquid clay or slip poured into multi-part plaster moulds. After initial drying and assembly, skilled ceramic artists applied hand-painted underglaze and overglaze details before multiple firings produced the signature glossy finish.

Authentic pieces feature a printed Royal Doulton lion and crown backstamp on the underside, accompanied by the specific model name and HN reference number. Hand-painted painters marks or initials are also frequently present near the factory mark.

Style ceramic figurines on open shelving, a mantelpiece, or within a glass display cabinet to highlight their sculptural form. Placing them alongside mid-century glassware or neutral books creates a balanced visual contrast without overwhelming the space.

Dust regularly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or a fine artist brush to clean intricate areas. Avoid harsh detergents or immersion in water, as moisture can enter untypically glazed vent holes and cause interior damage over time.
