Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

A caryatid is a sculpted female figure serving as an architectural support taking the place of a column or a pillar. Originating in ancient Greece, they were later revived during the Renaissance and Baroque periods for decorative cabinetry and interior joinery.

These pieces are typically hand-carved from solid native hardwoods such as English oak using traditional gouges and chisels. The timber often exhibits characteristic medullary rays and deep patination acquired over centuries.

Authentic period carvings display tool marks consistent with hand tools, dry shrinkage fissures, oxidised surface patination, and the use of quartersawn oak boards. Machine-cut edges, uniform tool patterns, and artificial ageing generally indicate modern reproductions.

Mounting historical wood fragments on a neutral gallery wall allows them to serve as sculptural focal points. They can also be integrated into custom cabinetry or displayed on specialist stands within study spaces and living rooms.

Maintain stable indoor humidity levels between 45 percent and 55 percent to prevent wood splitting. Avoid direct sunlight and central heating vents, applying an occasional microcrystalline wax to nourish the historic surface.
