We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

FAQs

Antique shop advertising signs were hand-painted or gilded boards used by merchants in the 19th and early 20th centuries to display business names, trades, and services on storefronts. These signs served as the primary visual identifiers for local commerce before modern illuminated branding.

These signs were traditionally constructed from solid timber planks, such as pine or mahogany, joined together and finished with hand-mixed oil paints or gold leaf lettering. The framing and mouldings were often crafted using mortise and tenon joinery to withstand outdoor weather conditions.

Authentic period signs typically exhibit genuine weathering, allcatoring in the paint, oxidisation on metallic leaf, and hand-lettering imperfections characteristic of pre-vinyl eras. The reverse side and mounting hardware often show age-appropriate patina and construction techniques consistent with early 20th-century carpentry.

A large architectural sign makes a striking statement piece when leaned against a neutral wall in a living room, hallway, or commercial space. Pairing its rustic industrial texture with minimalist furniture creates a balanced focal point that highlights the historical craftsmanship.

Preservation involves keeping the piece away from direct sunlight, high humidity, and extreme temperature fluctuations to prevent timber warping and paint flaking. Dust gently with a dry, soft microfiber cloth and avoid using chemical cleaning agents that can strip the original patina.
