This early nineteenth-century Regency side table is constructed from ebonised wood and sycamore with an ink-drawn finish in black and warm brown. The octagonal top features a classical figure panel surrounded by intricate floral penwork borders, supported by an ebonised pedestal and four shaped legs accented with turned finials and small turned feet. Signs of age and use appear in the original condition throughout the surface, including wear to the finish. Measuring 43 cm in width, 43 cm in depth, and 58 cm in height, the tilt-top design allows for compact storage. Position this side table in an empty corner as a striking accent piece to display decorative items or hold drinks in a living room, hallway, or study. The compact footprint makes it practical for smaller spaces while providing a distinctive classical focal point through its detailed ink work decoration on the top, pedestal, and base.

Keep the surface away from direct sunlight and moisture, dust gently with a soft microfibre cloth, and apply a non-silicone paste wax sparingly to protect the finish without damaging the ink work.

Position the table in an alcove, foyer, or beside a lounge chair, either flattened as a functional surface or tilted upright to showcase the central artwork as a decorative panel.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-drawn ink detail showing subtle variations, natural age craquelure in the protective varnish, authentic brass catch mechanisms, and period joinery under the tilting top.

These tables typically feature a solid hardwood substrate, such as birch or sycamore, finished with India ink illustrations and sealed with shellac, mounted onto ebonised mahogany or pine bases with brass tilt mechanisms.

Penwork is a decorative technique popularised in late 18th and early 19th-century Britain, involving fine ink drawings executed onto pale wood surfaces, often varnished over ebonised frames depicting classical figures or floral motifs.
