This large 18th-century Georgian tilt-top table is a classic example of English country house furniture. The piece is constructed from oak with a warm brown timber colour and shows good patination from age. The circular top tilts vertically to reveal a turned column support resting upon a tripod base with sweeping arched legs and pad feet. The table stands 72 cm high with a 92 cm width and depth. In a modern interior, this versatile table suits placement in a living room, hallway or study. When used horizontally, it provides a functional surface for lamps, books or decorative objects, while its tilting mechanism allows it to be stored compactly against a wall when not in use.

A tilt-top table, popular during the Georgian era, features a hinged mechanism that allows the circular or oval tabletop to tilt vertically when not in use. This design originated in the 18th century to save space in dining rooms and parlours when tea was not being served.

These tables were typically crafted from solid hardwoods such as oak, mahogany, or walnut, supported by a central turned pillar and a tripod base. The tilting mechanism relies on a wooden block and catch system secured with iron or brass fittings.

Authentic period pieces demonstrate hand-planed surfaces, irregular underside tool marks, and hand-cut dovetails or wooden pegs on the block assembly. The timber should exhibit natural wear, oxidisation, and shrinkage across joined boards.

Positioned upright in a room corner, the tilted tabletop functions as a sculptural accent displaying natural wood grain. Alternatively, lowering the top creates a functional surface for drinks, lamps, or display objects.

Keep the table away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent timber movement or cracking. Dust regularly with a dry cloth and apply beeswax polish periodically to maintain the original patina.
