This walnut jardinière table dates from 1880 in the French Louis XV style. It employs warm brown burr walnut timber combined with ormolu, porcelain and zinc, carrying a polished finish with natural light fading to one side, alongside scuffs and marks commensurate with age, plus a couple of cracks to the plaque at the back. Notable decorative details include a pierced brass gallery rim around the top, ormolu edging, cherub mounts at the corners, and cabriole legs terminating in ormolu sabots. A central Sèvres-style porcelain plaque adorns the frieze, complemented by inlay detail and an original lift-out metal liner. Measuring 76 cm high, 72 cm wide and 46 cm deep, this practical furnishing serves well in a home today for displaying houseplants or floral arrangements. Suitable placement includes a bay window or a living room corner where natural light highlights the porcelain plaque and brass mounts.

A jardiniere table is an ornamental piece of indoor furniture designed specifically to display potted plants and botanical arrangements. Originating in France during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, these tables traditionally feature a removable metal liner to collect excess water and protect the timber exterior.

French jardinieres were commonly constructed using hardwood timbers such as walnut, mahogany, or rosewood, often finished with decorative veneers. Decorative elements frequently included gilt-bronze ormolu mounts, hand-painted porcelain plaques, and removable zinc or lead interior liners.

Authentic pieces generally show hand-cut dovetail joints on concealed framework, original removable metal liners displaying age-appropriate patination, and heavy gilt-bronze mounts fixed with hand-slotted screws. Examining the reverse of ormolu castings and checking for natural wood shrinkage along veneer joints also helps verify age.

A jardiniere can be placed near a light source such as a bay window or positioned in an entryway to hold trailing greenery or seasonal flowers. Beyond botanical displays, removing or covering the liner allows the piece to function as an occasional side table or catch-all surface in a hallway.

Dust the wood regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a beeswax polish periodically along the grain. Ensure the internal metal liner is completely dry before inserting live plants to prevent moisture from seeping into the surrounding walnut veneer, and gently dust gilt-bronze mounts without chemical cleaners.
