This Georgian charger is a circular tin-glazed earthenware piece from the 18th century, designed in the Chinese taste. The surface carries hand-painted polychrome decoration featuring a white background, dark blue borders, orange fruits, green leaves, and reddish-orange oriental landscape details including a boat, water, rocks, and a tree. The rim displays alternating panels of blue-and-orange lattice diapering and foliate motifs, all under a glossy tin glaze showing minor pitting and fitting consistent with age and earthenware manufacture. The colour palette combines bright orange, cobalt blue, and rich green against the pale white base. Measuring 31.5 cm high, 31.5 cm wide, and 4 cm deep, the dish sits well displayed upon a mantelpiece in an English country house interior. The charger functions as a decorative wall or display piece in a traditional or period living space today.

An 18th-century English delft charger is a large tin-glazed earthenware display plate or platter produced in manufacturing centres such as London, Bristol, or Liverpool during the Georgian period. Inspired by Dutch delftware and Chinese porcelain, these objects feature an opaque tin glaze decorated with cobalt blue or polychrome enamel painted patterns.

Antique delftware was crafted from a porous, buff-coloured clay body fired at low temperatures before being dipped into an opaque lead glaze containing tin oxide. Hand-painted decoration was applied directly onto the dry, unfired glaze using metallic oxides before a final firing fused the pigments into the surface.

Authentic pieces display a soft earthenware body that is frequently exposed along the rim where small glaze chips have occurred over time. The glaze often exhibits fine surface crazing, pinholes from firing, and a distinctive reddish or pinkish undertone visible through thin areas of the white tin coating.

An antique delft charger can be presented on a plate stand atop a sideboard or mantelpiece to function as a focal point within a contemporary room scheme. Alternatively, mounting multiple chargers on a neutral wall creates a curated gallery feature highlighting historical ceramic artwork.

Tin-glazed ceramics should be cleaned gently using a dry, soft microfibre cloth to remove accumulated dust, avoiding liquid immersion which can enter microscopic glaze cracks. Keep items away from direct heat sources and handle edges with care to prevent chipping or flaking of the delicate glaze layer.
