This Victorian taxidermy diorama features a pair of waxwing birds mounted inside an ebonised wooden display case with glazed sides, measuring 38 cm high, 38 cm wide, and 13.5 cm deep. The enclosure houses artificial snowy branches adorned with red berries, set against a hand-painted watercolour backdrop depicting a winter sky and landscape. The timber frame displays a warm brown finish with visible aged patina, containing natural feathers in shades of brown, grey, and yellow. Suited for display in a home today, this piece fits on a sideboard top or within a cabinet collection, adding a traditional Victorian aesthetic to a study, library, or living room. The compact proportions allow placement on mantlepieces or shelving units alongside other natural history specimens.

Victorian cased taxidermy refers to the practice of mounting preserved animal specimens inside glass-fronted wooden boxes, often decorated with hand-painted backdrops and artificial vegetation. Popular throughout the nineteenth century, these pieces reflected a growing fascination with natural history and domestic decoration.

Taxidermists used wood, glass, and paper for the external casing, while internal scenes featured taxidermy specimens, wire, plaster, dried vegetation, faux moss, paper berries, and hand-painted paper backdrops to simulate natural habitats.

Authentic pieces generally feature hand-joined wooden frames, original float glass panes, hand-painted backdrops, and aged paper tape sealing the reverse. The internal materials often show natural age-related fading, oxidation, and historical preservation techniques.

Place cased taxidermy on sideboards, mantelpieces, or inside dark wood bookcases alongside historical books and brass objects. Integrating these items into gallery walls or curiosity displays creates an focal point in traditional and eclectic interior schemes.

Display cases away from direct sunlight, damp areas, and extreme temperature fluctuations to prevent feather fading and internal deterioration. Clean only the outer glass and frame using a soft dry cloth, ensuring the sealed backing remains intact to keep out dust and pests.
