It is a large, impressive piece, and just one of two examples that we purchased from a private homeowner.

An albarello is a waisted cylindrical ceramic jar historically used by apothecaries to hold medicinal herbs, ointments, and dried remedies. Originating in the Middle East and refined in Renaissance Italy, these tin-glazed vessels were designed for easy handling and storage on pharmacy shelving.

Italian majolica ceramic is crafted from an earthenware clay body coated with an opaque white glaze containing tin oxide.
