An Unusual and Very Risqué 19th Century Black Forest Nude Coat Hook

19th century
Description

The woman wearing pantaloons and holding a painted crest/armorial with real Chamois (antelope) horn legs. Well detailed including under the pantaloons. Circa 1875.

Possibly carved to shock and provoke conversation, from an old gentleman’s smoke room or private club. Or maybe it was a rich family’s private joke, where it was intended to hang on the wall all innocently, any one peaking was surely not going to admit they had been caught out!

One thing for sure, it is certainly a unique talking point.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating primarily in Switzerland around the Brienz region, Black Forest items feature detailed hand-carved timber often depicting wildlife, human figures, or functional novelties intended for travellers.

Craftsmen used local hardwoods such as lime or walnut, frequently incorporating carved timber with natural animal horns, textile accents, and hand-painted polychrome finishes.

Authentic period pieces exhibit crisp hand-chiselled detailing, age-appropriate surface oxidation, natural patina on unvarnished areas, and traditional joinery methods rather than modern adhesive.

A carved wall hook functions as sculptural artwork in an entryway, cloakroom, or dressing space, providing functional utility while serving as a distinct focal point.

Maintain the object by dusting lightly with a dry microfibre brush, avoiding direct heat or humid environments to prevent wood movement, and refraining from using wet cleaning solvents.
