Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A painted porcelain plaque is a flat ceramic panel decorated by hand with mineral pigments and fired at high temperatures to fuse the artwork permanently into the glaze. Popular across Europe during the nineteenth century, these plaques frequently showcased detailed miniature portraits, romantic genre scenes, or historical subjects.

The plaque itself is constructed from refined porcelain clay, hand-painted using specialized overglaze enamels. Framing typically comprised carved timber coated in gesso and finished with real gold leaf gilding, creating a rich pierced frame with acanthus leaf motifs.

Authentic nineteenth-century plaques often display fine brushwork under magnification, subtle kiln-firing irregularities on the unglazed reverse, and maker marks or artist signatures. The accompanying giltwood frames usually exhibit natural age patina, minor gesso cracking, and authentic hand-carved details.

Integrate the piece into a modern home by including it within an eclectic gallery wall alongside monochrome prints, or hang it in a narrow wall alcove to create a focal point. The warm gold leaf and delicate painted details add warmth and historical texture to contemporary neutral backdrops.

Dust the porcelain surface gently with a soft microfibre cloth, taking care not to apply liquid cleaners to unsealed areas. Clean the delicate giltwood frame using only a dry feather duster or soft camel-hair brush to prevent chipping the gesso or lifting gold leaf.
