Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A lowboy is a small table equipped with one or more drawers, originating in the 18th century as a dressing table or side table. Often designed as a companion piece to a tallboy chest, it features a low profile, shaped apron, and carved or cabriole legs.

19th-century lowboys were predominantly constructed from solid mahogany or walnut, frequently featuring pine or oak secondary drawer linings. Cast brass hardware, such as batwing handles and key escutcheons, was standard for securing the drawers.

Authentic antique lowboys typically feature hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, uneven hand-sawn timber back panels, and wear around the feet and drawer runners. Original brass fittings and hand-shaped apron details further indicate historic construction.

An antique mahogany lowboy functions well as a console table in a hallway, a compact writing desk, or a bedroom accent table. Combining the rich timber tones with neutral wall colours and contemporary table lighting creates a balanced scheme.

Maintain the timber finish by dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year. Keep the table away from direct sunlight, radiators, and extreme humidity to prevent timber shrinkage or warping.
