Antique Victorian Carved Walnut Console / Side Table

19th century
Description

A stunning antique Victorian carved walnut console / side table. This was made in England, it dates from around the 1860-1880 period.

It is of exceptional quality and is a very useful size. There is wonderful, detailed carving around all the edges, the top is beautifully shaped and has a slightly raised edge. The single drawer is pulled out with a leather handle that is fixed inside the drawer. The back of this is also nicely finished.

We have had this revived and re-polished, the condition is excellent for its age, with a lovely patina. The solid walnut top has a couple of very slight splits to the construction where the original joints on the edges, seen in the images. This is part and parcel of what sometimes happens with antique solid wood furniture, it doesn’t affect the look much and certainly doesn’t affect the use.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian carved walnut furniture is characterised by rich timber tones, intricate naturalistic or Rococo-inspired hand carvings, and elegant curved lines such as cabriole legs. Popular during the mid-to-late 19th century, these pieces reflected the eras appreciation for craftsmanship and ornate decoration.

Tables from this period were typically constructed using solid walnut or walnut veneers over hardwood frames. Joinery methods relied on traditional mortise-and-tenon joints, hand-cut dovetails, and carved aprons secured with wood pegs or period-correct animal glues.

Authentic pieces display signs of hand-craftsmanship, such as slight asymmetry in the relief carvings, original iron or brass fixings, and age-appropriate wear to the finish. Examining the underside often reveals secondary woods like pine or oak and authentic hand-saw marks.

Position the console table in an entryway or narrow hallway to act as an anchor piece. Balance the detailed woodwork by pairing it with a simple contemporary mirror overhead or minimal ceramic decorative accents.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft, dry cloth. To preserve the original patina, apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year, avoiding silicone-based sprays and keeping the item away from direct heat sources and sunlight.
