Victorian brass doorstops became popular in the 19th century as coal-fired central heating was not yet common, and heavy metal figures were utilised to prevent draughts from moving interior doors in large homes.

These items were typically produced using traditional sand-casting techniques, resulting in solid brass bodies that provided sufficient weight to hold doors open effectively.

Authentic period pieces usually exhibit heavy weight, hand-finished detailing, natural patination, and sand-core remnants in the cavity, whereas modern reproductions often feel lighter and lack surface wear.

Such functional objects can be placed on the floor to prop doors open in hallways or utilised purely as a decorative shelf accent to introduce metallic texture and historical character.

Maintenance requires dusting with a soft dry cloth and avoiding harsh chemical polishes that strip away the historical patination developed over centuries.
