Butler trays originated in the 18th and early 19th centuries as portable serving surfaces designed for domestic staff to transport food and drink before being placed upon folding wooden stands for use in entertaining.

Authentic period examples are typically constructed from dense tropical hardwoods such as mahogany or oak, featuring hand-cut dovetail joints, shaped gallery edges, and integrated cut-out carrying handles.

Authentication relies on examining the timber grain, patination, hand-planed surfaces, traditional joinery methods, and the presence of natural wear consistent with age and historical usage.

This piece can function effectively as a low occasional table or display surface, paired with neutral upholstery and traditional accessories to ground a room with historical depth.

Maintain the timber by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources, applying periodic applications of traditional beeswax, and avoiding synthetic cleaning agents or excessive moisture.
