Superb Large Carving Depicting Famous Composers, Writers And Poets

A very interesting and unusual large carved relief in solid walnut. The relief is divided into seven lozenges all designed in the Renaissance Revival manner, each containing a likeness of a famous creative with trophies relating to their respective fields below. The personalities represented are Alfred Tennyson, Felix Mendelssohn, George Handel, Robert Burns, Wolfgang Mozart, Gioachino Rossini, and Victor Hugo. The carving is of the highest quality and represents virtuoso work. The panel is in excellent condition with just a split to the lozenge containing Victor Hugo. The purpose of the piece is unknown although it was almost certainly created for a particular interior and perhaps an artistic institution. A large, unique and decorative piece. C.1900.
