Tall 19th Century Pair of Oriental Hardwood Stands

19th century
Description

A Very Good Quality And Extremely Attractive Pair Of Late 19th Century Oriental Hardwood Pot Stands, Or Lamp Tables, Having Attractive Rouge Marble Inset Tops, Over Lovely Foliate Carved And Pierced Friezes, With Two Further Panelled Tiers To Turned Legs, Terminating On Carved Claw And Ball Feet.

It is pretty common to find tables of this design in varying shapes and sizes, produced sometime around the mid 19th century in China, specifically for shipping to the western markets, but it is very rare to find pairs as nice as these particular ones, especially of this tall variety.

They are the absolute perfect size and form to be used as lamp tables or alternatively for their original purpose of standing pots and porcelain on. You could also of course use them as plinths for sculpture, clocks, or anything else similar.

The tables are constructed from dense, hard wearing oriental hardwood, which in combination with the marble tops, ensures that the tables are unlikely to be easily damaged.

The overall condition is good, with no structural issues in terms of the woodwork and the tightness of joints, so they are very much ready for immediate use.

As with all items which we offer for sale they have also received a natural wax polish by our restorers in our workshops.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

In 19th-century Chinese interiors, hardwood stands were designed to elevate decorative items such as potted bonsai trees, ceramic vases, incense burners, and scholar stones, signifying the aesthetic appreciation and status of the household.

These pieces were typically constructed from dense, high-grade hardwoods such as rosewood (zitan or hongmu) and jujube, often incorporating inset tops made of patterned marble, soapstone, or soft-wood floating panels.

Authentic pieces feature traditional joinery techniques, such as floating top panels and mortise-and-tenon joints without iron nails, alongside hand-carved openwork fretwork and natural age-related patination on the timber.

They serve as accent pedestals in empty corners, hallways, or living rooms to display indoor plants, modern table lamps, or contemporary sculptures, adding texture and historical contrast to a space.

Dust the timber regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth, keep the surface away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent shrinkage or joint movement, and apply beeswax sparingly to preserve the woods lustre.
