18th Century Mahogany Torchere Stand

18th century
Description

A Very Attractive And Good Quality Late 18th Century Georgian Mahogany Torchere, Or Candle Stand, Having Well Figured Detachable Circular Top With Moulded Rim, Over Elegant Turned Stem With Fluted Decoration, Terminating On Three Splayed Tripod Legs.

The actual definition of a torchere is a lamp on a tall stand made of wood or metal. However these days any kind of tall antique table, or stand, upon which a lamp or candlesticks may have been placed upon tends to be referred to as a torchere. Alternatively you will sometimes hear an item like this referred to as a candle stand, the reason for which doesn’t really need explaining obviously.

This particular example is very good quality, dating to the late 18th century, probably made in the Netherlands. As well as their own unique, elaborate styles of furniture, there were many Dutch craftsman copying English georgian designs and styles of furniture towards the end of the 18th century.

A useful little item there is a wide variety of spaces around the home which this georgian table would come in extremely useful, as well as looking incredibly elegant.

As with all items which we offer for sale this lovely little item has been attended to in our workshops by our highly skilled, traditional antique furniture restorers where it has been inspected and recieved a good clean plus a natural wax polish.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating from the French word for torch, a torchere stand is a tall, slender piece of accent furniture designed in the 17th and 18th centuries to elevate candles, oil lamps, or decorative vasiform objects.

Georgian torcheres were typically crafted from solid dense hardwoods such as Cuban mahogany, featuring hand-turned or fluted central columns, hand-cut dovetail or tenon joints, and carved tripod base supports.

Authentic period pieces feature signs of hand-planing on unseen underside surfaces, subtle variations in turned proportions from manual hand-lathe work, and natural oxidisation within timber grain recesses.

Position the stand in an unused corner or alcove to elevate contemporary ceramic sculpture, modern table lamps, or trailing indoor plants.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a soft beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year, keeping the wood clear of direct sunlight and radiator heat sources.
