FAQs

Victorian chess tables gained significant popularity during the 19th century as parlour games became a favoured social pastime among the middle and upper classes, often incorporating intricate marquetry and fine timbers.

These pieces were typically constructed from dense hardwoods like rosewood, walnut, or mahogany, featuring precision veneer work, marquetry or parquetry inlay for the playing surface, and turned pillar supports on tripod bases.

Authentic items generally exhibit period-appropriate joinery, natural timber ageing, hand-cut dovetails or tenons where applicable, and traditional French polish finishes rather than modern synthetic lacquers.

This piece works effectively as an occasional accent table in a study or living area, pairing well with both period antiques and clean-lined modern furniture to create a layered aesthetic.

Preservation involves keeping the timber away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent cracking or fading, dusting with a dry lint-free cloth, and periodically applying a microcrystalline wax to protect the polish.
