This Victorian oak centre and hall table is finished in a dark brown timber tone and stands 76 cm high, 103 cm wide, and 64 cm deep. The piece has a rectangular top with minor stains, above a single-drawer front frieze adorned with profuse carved foliage and a central pull handle. The corners display carved lion masks, and the structure rests on turned legs with mythical sea creature feet, joined near the base by a carved stretcher. Placed in a hallway or reception room, the table serves as a functional display surface or accent furniture piece. The solid oak construction and heavy carving display Victorian and Gothic design characteristics, providing a striking focal point for traditional interiors. Practical everyday use suits entryways or living spaces where surface area and period character are required.

FAQs

During the Victorian period, carved oak centre tables were crafted as prominent focal points for entrance halls and reception rooms, frequently featuring Renaissance Revival or Gothic Revival design details.

Craftsmen typically utilised solid English or European oak, employing traditional mortise and tenon joinery, relief-carved friezes, turned trestle legs, and stretcher supports for durability.

Authentic pieces exhibit signs of natural timber age, hand-carved decorative motifs, hand-cut joinery, historical wear along the base, and original dark patination within carved recesses.

Position the table in a spacious entrance hall or foyer, styling it with minimalist ceramics, modern lighting, or contemporary artwork above to create visual balance against the dark timber.

Dust regularly using a dry, soft cloth and apply a quality beeswax polish once or twice annually, working it gently into carved details while keeping the timber away from direct heat sources.
