This Edwardian rocking horse dates from 1920 in the style of F.H. Ayres, constructed from wood, leather, horsehair, glass, and steel with a dapple grey painted finish, a real horsehair mane and tail, and a brown leather saddle and bridle. The toy features detailed carved muscling around the neck, face, and legs, inset glass eyes, black-painted hooves, metal stirrup irons, and a heavy wooden safety stand with turned columns, all measuring 124.5 cm high, 137 cm wide, and 43 cm deep. Suitable for an empty corner in a traditional English country house interior, this piece serves as a decorative display or a functional toy. The horse mounts on a mechanical swing stand secured with metal hardware, while the removable leather tack, including the saddle and bridle, completes the traditional equestrian presentation.

Patented in the late 19th century, safety stand rocking horses replaced traditional bow rockers by utilizing a stationary wooden frame with iron swing irons. This design prevented tipping and reduced the floor space required, becoming the standard format for British manufacturers throughout the late Victorian and Edwardian periods.

Hand-carved pine or lime wood forms the hollow body, which is joined and finished with gesso and paintwork featuring dapple grey patterns. Accessories typically include real horsehair for the mane and tail, leather saddlery, glass eyes, and a hardwood frame with steel swing irons.

Distinctive features include a carved muscular jawline, hand-carved ears, inset glass eyes, and specific hoof shaping. Additionally, the construction of the safety stand features turned pillars, specific iron bracket shapes, and mortise-and-tenon joints characteristic of early 20th-century makers.

Positioning the horse as a focal accent piece in a hallway, nursery, or living area allows space around the stand to highlight its silhouette. Pairing it alongside neutral textiles, classic timber furniture, or minimalist decor creates historical contrast within a contemporary setting.

Keep the item in a stable room environment away from direct heat sources or dampness to prevent timber movement and paint cracking. Clean the painted surface gently with a dry cloth, condition leather fittings with specialist leather balm, and lightly brush the horsehair to avoid shedding.
