A torchere originated in the 17th century as a decorative stand designed to hold a light source such as a torch or candle, eventually evolving into a tall pedestal used for displaying sculptures, urns, or plants.

Victorian torcheres were typically constructed from dense hardwoods like mahogany or walnut, featuring turned columns, hand-carved detailing, and sturdy tripod or pedestal bases joined with traditional mortise and tenon or dowel construction.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-appropriate tool marks, natural patina and oxidisation on the timber, hand-carved motifs rather than moulded resin, and structural joinery consistent with 19th-century cabinetmaking practices.

An antique torchere can be integrated into a modern room as a vertical accent piece in an empty corner, used to display a contemporary ceramic vessel, or positioned to hold a trailing houseplant to add height and architectural interest.

Preserve antique mahogany by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber splitting, dusting regularly with a dry microfibre cloth, and occasionally applying microcrystalline wax to nourish the finish.
